A background screening will reveal much about a person’s history. You’ll learn vital pieces of information.
But something that is harder to ascertain – and perhaps is best done so in an interview – is integrity.
If someone works hard and is intelligent, that means you have two important pieces of the picture. However, if that person lacks integrity, then the other two qualities don’t matter. Someone who lacks integrity may not have your company’s best interest in mind.
You want someone who is always ethical, accountable and responsible. They know what is right and what is wrong.
The best way to get a handle on this is through the interview process. Ask your candidate questions where they have to make a decision between right and wrong. For example, ask he or she what they would do if they regularly witnessed someone clocking out of work early or being deceptive in other ways. Listen to how a person speaks about their own work history – does he/she take responsibility for their actions or do they tend to blame others?
